Sometimes I feel guilty for being so bland. I really do. But nine years into food allergies, one lesson I’ve learned is to keep things simple. It’s how I survive.
So I snapped a picture of one of the boys’ favorite breakfasts. It’s basic oatmeal with brown sugar and “butter”.
We have actually matured in our oatmeal pursuits over the years. From instant to quick to old fashioned and now onto steel cut, we absolutely love the chewiness of steel cut oats. They take more time to cook, but the hearty value is worth it.
In our morning oatmeal, our whole family uses dairy-free Earth Balance Buttery Spread or Melt.
The brown sugar will always be a struggle in this house. My boys enjoy it in heaping amounts.
And on a really good day, we add cinnamon and raisins to the mix. FANCY! 😉
Interestingly enough, Graham was actually allergic to oats as a baby. The baby cereals gave him a raw bottom, and Aveeno with oatmeal caused a horrible reaction. He tested allergic for sure. Eventually he could eat oats, and it’s his favorite breakfast now.
