Sloppy Joes. This has been one of my go-to recipes for years now. It’s easy to make in the crockpot for busy days, and it’s also something that can be made in bulk for parties and guests. It is originally dairy-free so it’s “normal food” for friends and family.
And here I wanted to share one of our tricks. You see, I have one child who used to cry at the dinner table because sloppy joes were just too…well….SLOPPY. Imagine that. I have tried many tricks including open face with a fork, but this here is the magic ticket. Serve sloppy joes on hot dog buns for the kiddos who just can’t handle too much slop. Problem solved!
If you are dairy-free, finding dairy-free hot dog buns can be tricky. We have been using Brownberry buns and just found Hy-Vee brand to be ok. Check labels for yourself always because ingredients change.
This recipe is adapted from my Betty Crocker cookbook.
Dairy-Free Sloppy Joes
1 lb ground beef or venison
1/2 cup chopped onion (1 medium)
1 can dice tomatoes
2 Tb quick oats
1 tsp chili powder
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic salt
Cook meat and onion til browned. Drain fat.
SKILLET OR DUTCH OVEN
Combine cooked meat with the rest of the ingredients. Bring to boil. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 5-10 minutes or until desired consistency is reached.
Place all ingredients (with the beef cooked) in crock pot on high heat until boil begins. Then reduce heat to low and enjoy when you want it.
