The thought of making homemade dairy-free pizza can be a little overwhelming at first.
That’s why we started our milk allergy journey with tortilla pizzas!
So quick, so easy, and so good that we still make them 17 years later. Here’s how.
TOP TIP FOR TORTILLA PIZZAS
Tortilla pizzas, although entirely delicious, are thin and light. We often eat more than we think we will. So make sure you have plenty of tortillas on hand before getting started. An easy general rule is two tortilla pizzas per person. Adding a side salad definitely helps fill everyone up.
That’s right, these personal size pizzas can be made in 30 minutes or less.
And despite now having lots more pizza options for our family these days,
we still turn to tortilla pizzas for a quick easy dinner on busy days.
Or for frugal Friday nights, of course.
My kids have always helped make them, too…
which is even more family fun.
Kids can whip up the pizza sauce in five minutes,
just 4 simple ingredients from the pantry.
While mom and dad clean and chop produce,
the kids start building their own pizzas how they like them.
And these pizzas can be done in about 20 minutes!
We do like to add a side salad with our tortilla pizzas since the pizzas are pretty light.
Each person in our family can easily eat two tortilla pizzas each so also make sure you have plenty tortillas on hand before you get started.
Below, you’ll find our pizza sauce recipe, favorite toppings, and more dairy-free pizza ideas so you can mix things up.
Lastly, make sure your tortillas and ingredients are safe for your food allergies by always checking labels and ingredients and calling companies for manufacturing information if need be.
Now onto tortilla pizzas!
EASY PIZZA SAUCE
We used to always make our pizza sauce from scratch but now enjoy some canned sauces, too.
If you want to make it yourself, here’s how we do it.
PIZZA SAUCE INGREDIENTS
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
PIZZA SAUCE DIRECTIONS
Just combine all four ingredients together.
No heating or cooking required.
Spread onto your pizza dough and cook pizza as usual.
HOW TO MAKE TORTILLA PIZZAS
To build our pizzas, we first cover tortillas with pizza sauce.
Then we top with dairy-free cheese, conservatively.
Last, we add the protein and veggies.
Here are our favorite dairy-free toppings.
PROTEIN PIZZA TOPPINGS
- dairy-free pepperoni
- dairy-free sausage
VEGGIE PIZZA TOPPINGS
- green peppers
- black olives
For cheese, we use shredded dairy-free cheese sparingly…
as in, 1/3 of the amount of dairy cheese we would use.
TORTILLA PIZZA DIRECTIONS
Bake tortilla pizzas in the oven on a low rack at 400 degrees until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Make at least one tortilla pizza for each member of your family.
With the very thin crust, these are not super filling and everyone will want a lot.
But they are so delicious and worth making several.
Hope you love tortilla pizzas as much as we do!
