Graham Cracker Gingerbread House

Here is the best and most easy way to do gingerbread houses allergy-friendly.

Build your own graham cracker houses!

It’s so easy to cut graham crackers to custom size and to assemble with homemade edible glue.

Then decorate with candy that’s safe for you.

We’ve been making dairy-free gingerbread houses with graham crackers for years!

And my kids actually turn down pre-made kits. I bought one that they wouldn’t even open!

Your kids will love this Christmas tradition, too, where they can unleash all their creativity and enjoy lots of safe nibbling, too.

See instructions below!

One of the top questions we get at our Facebook page during the holidays…

is how to create allergy-friendly gingerbread houses with the kiddos.

Well, take a look because we’ve got you covered!

For years now, we’ve been making adorable gingerbread houses using graham crackers.

It all started when I saw a graham cracker box with a gingerbread house on it, and it was game on.

So fun, right?!

There are many benefits to making gingerbread houses with graham crackers.

WHY MAKE GRAHAM CRACKER HOUSES

  • One, you can really get creative and make it your own!
  • Two, everyone in the family can make one. Have a little contest!
  • Three, of course it’s super inexpensive.
  • Four, it’s so inexpensive that you can host a house-making party with friends.
  • Five, eat one, keep one! Per my kids.

These are so fun, in fact…

that in recent years when I bought a real gingerbread house kit instead…

my boys told me to stick to graham crackers. HA!

They think making their own creations is way more fun.

We didn’t even open the kit we bought!

HOW TO MAKE GRAHAM CRACKER HOUSES

1. MAKE GLUE

Make edible glue by stirring together these two ingredients into a paste.

  • 1 and 1/2 cup powder sugar
  • 5 teaspoons of water

Use an actual measuring spoon. If it’s too thick after 5 teaspoons of water, add 1/4 teaspoon at a time until you reach glue-like consistency. You don’t want it too thin.

2. CUT HOUSE PIECES

Using a bread knife, gently cut the graham crackers into pieces for your small house. See below.

3. ASSEMBLE WALLS

Use four more square graham crackers and edible glue to carefully assemble four walls. Glue a square graham cracker on top of the four walls.

4. BUILD THE ROOF

Use two more square graham crackers and edible glue to create a roof on your gingerbread house. It just take a little balancing act, sometimes four hands.

5. FILL IN THE ROOF

Now cover the holes in your roof with two triangle graham crackers and edible glue. It’s ok if it’s not a perfect fit. You can fill holes with more edible icing and candy!

6. LET THE GLUE DRY

Let the edible glue dry and harden before decorating with candy. Then you’ll have a nice solid house to work with. This may take about an hour, depending on how runny you made your glue.

7. DECORATE WITH CANDY

Once the edible glue is dry and your house is solid, start applying candy using the edible glue.

8. COMBINE HOUSES (OPTIONAL)

Feel free to create several little graham cracker houses to build onto each other and make a large edible house!

Hope you love making allergy-friendly graham cracker houses as much as we do.
