Are Pineberries Good?

Are white strawberries good?

As a strawberry fan, I had to know!

So when I finally found these beautiful pineberries, we definitely gave them a try.

In the dreary month of February, these pretty little berries were making the rounds online.

And friends were asking what they were and how they tasted.

I knew I had seen them in a store somewhere but didn't give them a second look.

What in the world was wrong with the strawberries this year? HA!

They looked so weird, and I just passed them by.

Of course, after everyone started talking about them, however...

I wanted to kick myself for not picking some up.

At our house, we are huge berry fans.

Always must have a huge bag of frozen blueberries on hand from our Sam's shopping.

Always grabbing organic strawberries at a reasonable price when we hit Aldi.

So I promised my friends I would give these white strawberries, or pineberries as they're called, a try the next time I saw them.

Luckily for me, I stumbled upon them while doing my Aldi shopping, soon after.

The pineberries were all lined up in beautiful packaging.

It appeared they were ripe and ready? Who knows, they were white!

But they were pretty and without even giving them a little touch...I decided to take my chances.

I've been known for spilling containers of berries on the floor at Aldi, but that's a story for another day. HA!

I couldn't chance that with these beauties.

Incredibly, they were just $4.99. Even my frugalist pals cheered with me over the price.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, I excitedly brought these bad boys home.

That night, I served them with dinner on a berry spread of strawberries, raspberries, and pineberries.

All from Aldi, woohoo.

But how did they taste?

ARE WHITE STRAWBERRIES GOOD?

My youngest kiddo could not wait to sink his teeth into this strange new fruit.

But I insisted we all try at the same time, and one family member who won't be named held out until the end of the meal.

Then finally, it was time.

Hubby, two kiddos, and myself grabbed our first pineberries and gave them a try.

We could tell they were perfectly ripe by the sweetness and softness.

Not too soft, not mushy. But the perfect softness. Like a strawberry.

And to answer the question, yes! They were good.

WHAT DO PINEBERRIES TASTE LIKE?

Everyone but me said they tasted just like strawberries.

And the texture was certainly that of a strawberry.

But me? I got a hint of some unique taste that I couldn't pinpoint for a moment.

Now some people say they taste like citrus or pineapple, but none of us tasted that.

Then it came to me. BUTTER!

These beautiful, ripe, bargain pineberries tasted like butter strawberries to me.

Bwahahahahahaha! Am I crazy?

I had to test it again the next day as we savored the package through the week.

And yep, sure enough. Pineberries again tasted like buttery strawberries to me.

I ended up reaching more for the red strawberries through the week and let my kiddos finish off the white strawberries.

WOULD I BUY PINEBERRIES AGAIN?

Sure, for $5, I'd buy them again. I love that they were perfectly ripe and ready and packaged so nicely.

Having these around Valentine's Day is absolutely perfect as we look for fun little treats to enjoy.

However, one package was good for us this year.

Unless...I found pineberries cheaper than strawberries. Then I'd grab the white berries to save money.

For the most part, though, I'll just look forward to hopefully another package next year.

In the meantime, we'll keep enjoying Aldi's affordable red strawberries, blueberries, raspberries...all organic!

I do like that the pineberries were grown in Florida, USA.

HOW TO EAT WHITE STRAWBERRIES

Enjoying the pineberries with an assortment of other berries was fun, especially since the white was such a contrast to the red berries.

White strawberries certainly appeal to the eyes.

With that buttery flavor that my family did not taste, I'd not hesitate to dip these babies in chocolate.

Check out our easy dairy-free chocolate fondue spread. Pineberries would work great on a fondue board.

Because these berries can be a little pricey, more than $5 at other stores...

I'd not want to use these for strawberry short cake or strawberry pie or another dish that calls for several strawberries.

Keep them whole and let them be the star of the show.

I think that must be what they were created for.

If you've tried pineberries, please let us know what you thought in the comments.

Anyone else taste butter? I've gotta know!
