Growing up, my very favorite breakfast was warm, sweet, cream of wheat.
Mom served it with toast.
And we kids would pile a scoop of the hot cereal onto the toast,
and take a big bite of cereal covered bread.
I'm dying to know if this is a thing or if my siblings and I were just crazy. Ha ha.
I remember my aunt made hers with water, but mom made ours with milk.
And milk definitely won the contest...
even though I always despised drinking it straight.
So this was one way to get milk in me.
When I discovered I could make this hot, filling breakfast for my own kiddos, despite food allergies, I was a pretty excited mom.
It's the little things, right?
Just make your cream of wheat with water or dairy-free milk per instructions on the box.
Then we immediately pour it into individual serving bowl.
Top with a dollop of dairy-free butter in each bowl.
Then sprinkle with sugar.
I really like raw, turbinado sugar in our cream of wheat.
And that's it!
This is an easy, hot, dairy-free breakfast in just ten minutes or so.
HOW TO MAKE CREAM OF WHEAT
Makes 2 Servings
Put 2 cups of dairy-free milk or water in a medium sauce pan.
Add ¼ teaspoon of salt.
Stir in ⅓ cup of cream of wheat.
Start cooking the mixture on medium heat, stirring constantly with a whisk or spoon.
Continue stirring and heating until the cereal thickens and starts to pop.
Lower heat and stir just a bit longer, it doesn't have to be desired thickness when you stop cooking.
Pull off heat and pour into individual bowls, it will thicken more in the bowls.
Top with dairy-free butter and sugar while hot.
The cereal should thicken perfectly while you wait for it to cool a little.
It comes out piping hot, too hot to eat right away.
Enjoy warm, served fresh.
If it's too thick, just as a dash of dairy-free milk until desired consistency is reached.
HOW TO PREVENT LUMPY CREAM OF WHEAT
Yes, cream of wheat can lump up badly and scar your kids for life.
So be sure to do these three things.
Stir the cereal into the cold milk or water before starting to heat.
Just keep stirring, stirring, stirring...while cooking. A whisk works the best!
And get it into individual bowls straight off the stove.
Below, see the ingredients on our box. But always double-check labels, ingredients can change.
Hope you enjoy your dairy-free cream of wheat as much as we do!
