Baked Cinnamon Sugar Donuts Dairy-Free Egg-Free

Hot fresh cinnamon sugar donuts made right at home.

And easily dairy-free and egg-free for our food allergy friends.

Long weekends at our house mean one thing.


My hubby grabs some for half the family from the shop down the street…

while my food allergy son and I are perfectly happy having homemade, allergy-friendly donuts all to ourselves!

Homemade is best.

As mentioned before, my son can eat Katz and Kinnickinnick boxed donuts (gluten-free and dairy-free, not egg-free).

But he prefers my homemade cake donuts.

He even prefers mine over Disney donuts!

Man, I feel loved. 

We usually make chocolate donuts,

however this time he was craving cinnamon sugar.

Great idea!

These were so delicious right out of the oven.

Hot and sweet.

Melt in the mouth.


Kiddo ate three right away, and I had to make him save the others for later.  

With no dairy-free yogurt on hand, I tried canned coconut milk (affiliate) and it worked splendidly.

Mix the fat and liquid in the can of coconut milk until you reach the consistency of yogurt, and you’re good to go. 


If you don’t have a donut pan, you can simply make these in a muffin tin.

But after you try our donut recipe, you will want a donut pan for sure. 

And this donut pan (affiliate) is the best.

There’s none better for easy removal and easy clean.

No fuss and so worth it. You’ll love it!

This recipe makes 6 regular size donuts.

Again, if you don’t have a donut pan yet, just use a muffin tin.

But another fun tip is to make mini donut “holes” using a mini muffin tin.

Yes, they turn out more like mini muffins.

But we call them donut holes and nobody minds.

This way you yield many more donuts, about 24.

And that makes it easier for sharing!

Also great for portion control.

I know mini muffin pans can be hard to clean but not this one!

Now here’s the donut recipe below.

Makes 6 regular size donuts.

Oven 350 degrees.


1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (don’t leave this out or you won’t get a doughnut taste)
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons solid coconut oil or dairy-free butter
1/4 cup dairy-free buttermilk (1/4 cup dairy-free milk + 1 tsp. of lemon juice or vinegar)
1/4 cup canned coconut milk with yogurt consistency or dairy-free yogurt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg, 1 flax egg, or 3 tablespoons applesauce


4 tablespoons dairy-free butter
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon

Lightly grease a doughnut tin or muffin tin or mini muffin tin. No grease needed with USA pans

Preheat oven to 350.

Make your buttermilk in a measuring cup by mixing 1/4 cup dairy-free milk with 1 tsp. lemon juice or vinegar. Set aside.

If using flax egg, mixing 3 Tbs. water with 1 Tbs. ground flax. Set aside.

In a large bowl or your Kitchen Aid Mixer Bowl (affiliate) combine 1 c. flour, 1 tsp. baking powder, and 1/4 tsp. baking soda.

Next, whisk in 1/2 c. sugar, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg, and 1/2 tsp. salt.

Fork in the 2 Tbs. solid coconut oil or dairy-free butter until the flour becomes coarse crumbs. The Kitchen Aid Mixer is also great for this. 

In a separate bowl, mix together 1/4 cup dairy-free buttermilk, 1/4 c. canned coconut milk or yogurt, 1 tsp. vanilla, and egg or flax egg or 3 Tbs. applesauce.

Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and mix until just combined. Don’t over mix.

Use a spoon to fill each donut wells 1/2 full.

Bake until donuts spring back to the touch.

Start at 12 minutes.


While donuts are baking, melt 4 Tbs. of dairy-free butter in a bowl.

Then in a separate bowl, mix together 1 Tbs. cinnamon and 1/4 cup sugar.

When donuts come out, let them sit 5 minutes so they don’t fall apart.

Then remove from pan and immediately coat all sides in the melted butter. If doing mini muffins, you can get away with just doing dairy-free butter and cinnamon sugar on the tops. 

Next, roll the donuts in the cinnamon sugar mixture.

These cinnamon sugar donuts are best enjoyed hot and fresh!

I do not have a dairy problem so I used dairy but I do not eat eggs and I have a flax sensitivity so I just left out and used a little more water. I used buttermilk powder and one pure lemon dry packet. They came out wonderfully, very light and soooo good. Recipe was perfect for my 6 donut pan. I will sure make these again really soon. I want to try with dried strawberries or fresh peaches. Yummy
