Chocolate Banana Smoothie Dairy-Free

Our best, dairy-free, kid-friendly smoothie for over 15 years.

Chocolate, banana, peanut butter smoothies make a great breakfast, snack, or even lunch.

If you can’t do peanut butter,  just use your favorite substitute or leave it out.

We also have some veggie ideas to sneak in, too!

This smoothie is one of my kids’ favorites of all time.

Bananas make it sweet and creamy.

If you can do peanut butter or a peanut butter substitute, there’s the protein.

And the chocolate gives it a nice dessert touch the kids can’t resist.

However, this smoothie is very flexible, and I change it up easily.

Maybe that’s what keeps my kids so enticed.

Here’s how to mix things up.

VARIOUS WAYS TO MAKE THIS SMOOTHIE

OMIT PEANUT BUTTER

If you have peanut allergy, banana chocolate smoothies taste just as yummy! Or use your favorite peanut butter substitute. That works, too.

OMIT CHOCOLATE

You can opt for unsweetened chocolate in this smoothie so it’s no added sugar. But if you want to omit the chocolate altogether, like our friends who have cocoa allergy, that’s fine! Peanut butter banana smoothies are delicious.

ADD GREENS

Below, I’ll go over a few greens we sometimes add to our smoothie. They turn the whole smoothie to a green color. And then you can call it a Green Monster, which the kids will dig.

ADD OTHER VEGGIES

There are other sneaky vegetables you can add that your kiddos WON’T notice. They add no flavor or color but definitely add nutrition!

ADD GROUND FLAX

For extra fiber, ground flax is easy to add to this smoothie without changing the flavor. Totally optional.

For this smoothie, however, we do think bananas are a necessity.

See below for how we keep them on hand at all times so we can have a quick, dairy-free smoothie whenever we want.

HOW TO FREEZE BANANAS

We always have frozen bananas in our freezer for smoothies.

And here’s how that goes down.

I buy lots of bananas at once.

Some get eaten. Some go brown.

For those that go brown, we peel them and flash freeze them on a cookie sheet.

If you have a strong blender, you can simply break the bananas in half.

If you have a standard blender, you’ll want to slice the bananas in 1 inch coins so your blender can handle them when it comes time to make smoothies.

After the bananas are frozen from the flash freeze,

store them in an airtight freezer container or freezer bag in the freezer.

Pull out what you need when it’s smoothie time!

Keep the rest frozen for later.

DAIRY-FREE RECIPES WITH FROZEN BANANA

Besides chocolate banana smoothies,

here are other dairy-free and egg-free recipes we like to make with brown bananas.

Or we thaw frozen bananas we have on hand for these treats.

ingredients for dairy free oat milk smoothie

SMOOTHIE INGREDIENTS

1. FROZEN BANANAS

They make a smoothie so creamy and are a natural sweetener.

2. DAIRY-FREE MILK

My kids like oat milk, I like coconut milk. Other dairy-free milk options include almond, hemp, and flax.

We also like to use pea protein milk to bulk up the protein for our growing boys.

3. PEANUT BUTTER OR SUBSTITUTE

Our favorite brand is Smucker’s Natural because it’s sugar-free.

If you are peanut and nut-free, you can use your safe peanut butter alternative.

But honestly, you can leave this ingredient out all together.

4. DAIRY-FREE CHOCOLATE

For myself, I like dairy-free chocolate protein powder.

For my kids, I do cocoa powder or chocolate syrup.

5. ICE

I really like our smoothies cold so I’ll add about 6 ice cubes per serving to the blender.

You can add more if you’d like.

6. GROUND FLAX (OPTIONAL)

This is great for the Omega-3 and fiber.

Sometimes I leave it out.

Now see possible veggie add-in’s below.

SNEAKY SMOOTHIE VEGETABLES

Here are some extra veggies you can throw in, and the kids won’t even taste them.

  • CAULIFLOWER: wash and throw in a handful, it’s tasteless
  • PUMPKIN PUREE: a tablespoon per serving, your kids won’t know
  • LEAFY GREENS: a handful of washed spinach, romaine, or kale

Only the greens are detectable by the kiddos because the smoothie turns green.

But they think that’s cool, especially if you call it a Green Monster Smoothie!
