Dental Care Tips & Warnings for Milk Allergy

 

Like many of you, I constantly worried about dental care and products and hands going into my kiddo's mouth. 

We are an anaphylactic epi family and have to be as safe as possible. 

My sister was a pediatric dentist, and I always remember her biggest food allergy warning was the Recaldent ingredient that contains milk.

INGREDIENT RECALDENT CONTAINS MILK

One particular Trident Gum is often mentioned on our Facebook Page as an unsuspecting Recaldent product.

This gum is shown on the Recaldent website, as well. 

This goes to show that milk can be in anything.

As for toothpaste, I've done both fluoride and non-fluoride with my kiddos.

but as you can imagine, the Recaldent warning kept me on my toes.

DENTAL FLOSS

Now here's one you may not have thought of before. 

Buying floss is an absolute pain. 

It's nearly impossible to find plain old floss not flavored with mouth wash, crystals, glitter...

ok, maybe not glitter. 

But it's out of control. 

Our best find has been these simple, ribbon floss picks at Walgreens. 

I avoid all the extra added stuff because I don't know what's in it. 

 

VISITING THE DENTIST WITH FOOD ALLERGIES

I will wrap this up with a few ideas we've used when visiting the dentist. 

Possibly bring your own toothpaste for polishing. 

Possibly bring your own floss for flossing. 

Some families opt out of fluoride or make sure you read the ingredients well with the dentist first. 

If you have success with certain products at the dentist, have them hold back a stash for your upcoming visits. 

Dental offices change out products often based on samples they receive and such. 

Ours is happy to save brands and flavors that worked for us...so we can have them again next time without too much worry.

And if you're wondering further, yes our kiddo with food allergies has had cavities filled. 

The gas was used when he was younger, too. 

But again, dental products and brands all vary so it's always best to talk to the dentist. 

Preferably, the dentist and hygienist. 

I love having a small, private office that knows us and our allergies.

That's probably helped us a lot, as well.
