What do you do when a recipe calls for egg but you have an egg allergy?
I’ve found that replacing 1 or 2 eggs with a flax egg works really well in most cases.
And even though we no longer need to avoid egg in our house, I still use flax egg for many recipes.
The taste and texture is that good.
And it’s a great way to conserve my eggs.
Here are our favorite recipes using flax for egg.
OUR TOP RECIPES USING FLAX EGG
WHAT DOES FLAX EGG TASTE LIKE
I wondered the same thing, and it’s actually really pleasant.
You won’t necessarily taste the flax in baked goods,
although you may see the little golden flecks in your finished product.
However, one exception, I do taste the flax when I make French toast.
But it’s a good taste!
It gives the eggless French toast a nice nutty flavor that our readers tell us they really enjoy.
We like it, too!
DOES FLAX GO BAD
You can buy flax seeds already ground or you can buy whole flax seeds and grind them in your blender.
Make sure to keep your ground or whole flax seeds in an airtight container, in the freezer.
They won’t actually freeze and will be ready to use anytime you need an egg.
Freezing helps flax last longer.
OTHER USES FOR FLAX SEEDS
I also love to sprinkle ground flax seeds on salads, in smoothies, in cereal, and on oatmeal.
Consider it versatile and healthy food sprinkles and a great source of fiber.
Kids won’t even notice it.
FAVORITE FLAX BRAND
We are now excited to know that Gerbs carries flax seeds and ground flax!
They are an allergy-friendly company.
And you can see their allergy information on Amazon…
where I order their nut-free and allergy-friendly seeds often.
Here is Gerbs flax meal on Amazon (affiliate) if you’re interested.
It’s a big bag so take note of their extra storage instructions.
HOW TO MAKE A FLAX EGG
This recipe makes the equivalent of ONE egg.
Double the recipe to replace two eggs in a recipe.
INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon ground flax
3 tablespoons warm water
DIRECTIONS
Put 1 tablespoon of ground flax into a small cup.
Add 3 tablespoons of warm water to the ground flax.
Whisk the flax and water together.
Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until it reaches egg-like consistency.
Then use the mixture as you would use egg in your recipe.
Hope you enjoy using flax egg as much as we do!

Thanks for this flax egg recipe, truly a Blessing as I’ve just recently been diagnosed with an egg allergy at the age of 57. I’m sooo excited to try this and to know my sweet tooth can still be satisfied!
