I promised the Milk Allergy Mom Members that I’d finalize my list of 50 favorite dairy-free dinners…
that kids will eat and love.
And today I’m getting one step closer to making good on that promise.
Member friends, our updated printable list of dinners is coming!
Perfect for adding to your allergy binder and other recipe sheets.
If you’re not yet a MAM Member, whatcha waiting for?!
We would love to be part of your food allergy adventure and to share all the fun member features, perks, and benefits with you.
Now onto probably the most loved sandwich at our house…
the good ole’ bacon sandwich.
You may call it a BLT…
but when one of my kids only wants bacon and bread, I’ve gotta call that a bacon sandwich.
HA!
However, other kiddo totally eats it traditional…bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo.
As for me and hubby, we just gotta have the added avocado.
Smashed, sliced, it doesn’t matter. BLTA is really where it’s at.
That’s what makes this dinner so easy.
Once you cook up the bacon and grab your dairy-free bread, everyone can make their sandwich just how they like it.
Toasted or not toasted bread? You decide!
Two of us like it toasted, one likes it very lightly toasted, and one has to have it soft.
We are so weird!
I do love this dinner though because it’s easy. Everyone can cook bacon, toast bread, and cut and clean veggies!
That’s right, veggies. What a great way to get kids to eat them.
Even though my one kiddo doesn’t like the lettuce and tomato on his sandwich,
he will eat tomato wedges and plain lettuce on the side. Works for me!
Read on for how to make these dairy-free and delicious.
DAIRY-FREE BLT INGREDIENTS
FINDING DAIRY-FREE BREAD
If your a milk allergy mom like me, you’ve probably already guessed that finding dairy-free bread is really the hardest part to making milk-free sandwiches.
For those of you just learning about milk allergy, bread is a tough one. Not only will just one or two brands be milk-free out of a whole grocery aisle…
but brands will change their ingredients regularly. Sometimes milk. Sometimes not milk. Over 15 years of doing this milk allergy thing, and I can’t even count how many times we’ve had to change bread brands. AGH!
Right now, here’s the dairy-free bread we are mostly using. But please check the labels, the ingredients can change at any time!
And we don’t call companies about manufacturing so you may need to do that if your allergist recommends it for your family.
BACON
For the bacon, we’ve converted to baking our bacon in recent years.
Simply line a cookie sheet well with foil, lay out the bacon in a single layer, and bake in the oven on 400 degrees until cooked to your liking. We like our bacon crispy!
Flip the bacon once about halfway through.
While the bacon is cooking, cover a large plate or paper plate in paper towels.
When the bacon is done, pull it from the oven and use tongs to move the hot cooked bacon to a paper towel on the plate. This helps absorb bacon grease. Layer bacon and paper towels in single layers.
LETTUCE
Iceberg lettuce is always suitable for BLT’s.
After all, it comes apart in big pieces perfect for layering into a sandwich.
But we also love our garden lettuce for BLT sandwiches!
TOMATO
Speaking of the garden, garden season is the perfect time of the year for BLT’s.
Not only do we grow lettuce, but also huge juicy tomatoes.
When both are ready for harvest, we eat BLT’s for several days.
There’s no better time!
If you’re in Milk Allergy Mom Membership, be sure to see our files in the library about gardening.
It’s an awesome hobby for food allergy families, and inside membership we inspire each other every year with gardening tips and advice.
AVOCADO
I wish I could grow my own avocados, but not in Illinois.
So we snag these up at the store.
Here’s my post about finding the perfect avocado.
Again, hubs and I will either slice or smash it for our BLTA.
But I don’t add anything to it, no salt or anything. Just straight up avocado, and it’s delicious!
It’s hard for me to eat a bacon sandwich without it.
MAYONNAISE
We do like mayo on our BLT’s.
But if you’re egg-free, make sure you find a vegan mayo that works for you.
I love that we have this option now! We didn’t when both my kids were allergic to egg.
So leaving it out is perfectly fine, too.
HOW TO MAKE A DAIRY-FREE BLT
BREAD: Make sure it’s dairy-free and safe for your allergies. Either toast it or leave it untoasted, your pick!
BACON: Cook your bacon to desired doneness on the stove or in the oven. Baking instructions above.
LETTUCE: Wash and dry iceberg or garden lettuce.
TOMATO: Wash and slice a large tomato.
AVOCADO: Wash, peal, and pit a ripe avocado. Then either slice or smash it with a fork.
MAYO: If you’re egg-free, find a vegan mayonnaise to use for this or feel free to omit mayo.
ASSEMBLE: Layer bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and avocado (if using) onto a slice of bread. Top the sandwich with a second slice of bread. Because this sandwich can be quite loaded, we like to cut ours in half with a bread knife for the kids.
Serve with chips, fruit, and a pickle for a well balanced meal that tastes just like you were sitting at a restaurant.
Hope you enjoy these dairy-free bacon sandwiches as much as we do!
