Favorite Dairy Substitutes

pile of dairy substitutes

Living without dairy felt impossible 16 years ago when my son was first diagnosed.

Back then, we had one soy cheese, one rice milk, and two dairy-free butters to choose from.

But today, the dairy-free, plant-based food products abound!

From chocolate to yogurt to even frozen pizza…dairy-free life doesn’t feel so hard anymore.

Because we get asked so often, I’ve listed our top favorite dairy substitutes below.

And they are mostly based on our taste preference over the past many years.

Of course, check labels and make sure these products and brands work for your food allergies.

We’ll just list the basics like dairy-free milk, butter, yogurt, cheese, chocolate, ice cream, whipped cream, and pizza.

You can find our other favorite dairy-free foods and treats throughout this website.

Hope you’re inspired!

PLEASE NOTE: Here at Milk Allergy Mom, we simply share products that work for our family. Please consult your own doctor before trying food, supplements, or other products. Also read all labels and call companies for the latest, most accurate product information.

I'm living in Kenya and I'm not able to find any of the butter replacements. I can find coconut oil, coconut milk/cream, almond milk (some days), and soy milk. What should I use when making cookies? I want to make some yummy Christmas cookies but most have butter. Thank you!

I have tried every milk replacement on the market and my toddler is allergic to all of them she has dairy, egg, and nut allergies. Most recently we've tried hemp, ripple, and oat milk. Either she likes it but has a reaction to it or it tastes bad. Do you have any ideas. I think we've almost run out of options.

We love the Earth Balance Buttery Spread, but are careful now to get the one without pea protein as our 1yo is also allergic to green peas.
